About Keno

Keno runs four draws a day, every day, at 10 am, 1 pm, 3 pm and 6 pm, more chances to play than any other Lotto NZ game. Twenty numbers are drawn from a pool of 80, and you decide how many numbers to play and how much to stake on each line.

That flexibility is what sets Keno apart. Play one number or ten, stake $1 a line or $100, and the prize table shifts accordingly. A single $1 line with ten numbers can still return $250,000.

How to play Keno

Choose your spend per line. Anywhere from $1 to $100. Prizes scale directly with this: match five of five on a $1 line and you win $300, on a $2 line $600, on a $10 line $3,000.

Choose how many numbers to play. From 1 to 10 per line. This is your prize group: ten numbers puts you in prize group 10. Pick them yourself, or buy a Dip and get ten random numbers on each line.

Add Multiplier if you want it. It doubles your ticket cost and multiplies any prize by the value drawn that game.

Pick your draws. Enter one, several, or all four of the day's draws.

How winning works

Each prize group has its own threshold. Generally you need to match about half your numbers or more before anything pays, and the more numbers you match within your group, the bigger the prize.

This is why playing more numbers isn't automatically better. Match three numbers in prize group 6 and you win $2 on a $1 line. Match the same three in prize group 7 and you win nothing, because that group starts paying at four.

Prize group 10 works differently at the bottom end: match none of your ten numbers and you still collect $3 on a $1 line.

Keno prize table and odds

Twenty numbers are drawn from 80. This table shows what each result pays at three common stakes, and the chance of winning any prize in each group. Prizes scale with your stake: a $5 line pays five times the $1 amount.

Keno Multiplier

Multiplier is an optional add-on that doubles what your ticket costs. One multiplier value is drawn at every Keno draw, and if your line wins, the prize is multiplied by whatever came out.

The values aren't equally likely. ×1.5 and ×2 come up most draws, while ×10 appears about once every 86 draws.

Multiplier Odds (1 in)
×1.5 1.9
×2 3
×3 12.3
×5 21.5
×10 86

One cap applies. If the combined value of all prizes for matching 7 of 7, 8 of 8, 8 of 9, 9 of 9, 9 of 10 and 10 of 10 exceeds $2.5 million in a single draw (Multiplier included), those prizes are scaled back proportionally.

Keno FAQ

When does the Keno draw take place?

Keno is drawn four times a day, every day, at 10 am, 1 pm, 3 pm and 6 pm.

What time do Keno ticket sales close?

Tickets for each draw are on sale until shortly before it starts. Buy before 10 am, 1 pm, 3 pm or 6 pm to be in that draw.

How much does it cost to play Keno?

You set your own spend per line, anywhere from $1 to $100. The total comes down to your spend per line, how many lines you play, how many draws you enter, and whether you add Multiplier, which doubles the ticket cost.

How many numbers can I play?

Between 1 and 10 per line. That number is your prize group: play five numbers and you're in prize group 5, play ten and you're in prize group 10. Dip tickets always use 10 numbers per line.

Where do I buy Keno tickets?

From any Lotto NZ retailer, or online through MyLotto.

How old do I have to be to play Keno?

You must be 18 or older to buy a ticket, whether in-store or through MyLotto.

Can I play Keno if I don't live in New Zealand?

Lotto NZ sells tickets in New Zealand, in-store and through MyLotto. Third-party concierge and messenger services advertise NZ lottery tickets to overseas players, but they are independent businesses with no connection to Lotto NZ, and using one doesn't change the age requirement or any other eligibility rule.

How do I win Keno?

It depends on your prize group. In most groups you need to match roughly half your numbers or better: play six and match three, and you've won something. Play seven and match three, and you haven't, because prize group 7 starts paying at four matches. Prize group 10 is the exception: matching none of your ten numbers pays $3 on a $1 line.

What are the odds of winning Keno?

It depends on how many numbers you play. The chance of winning any prize ranges from about 1 in 4 with one number to about 1 in 22 with four numbers. Matching all ten in prize group 10 is about 1 in 8.9 million.

What is the Keno Multiplier?

An optional add-on that doubles your ticket cost. A multiplier of 1.5, 2, 3, 5 or 10 is drawn at every Keno draw, and if your line wins, the prize is multiplied by that number. The value drawn is random: 1.5 comes up around 1 draw in 1.9, while 10 comes up around 1 in 86.

What is the biggest prize I can win?

$250,000 from a $1 line, by matching all ten numbers in prize group 10. Because prizes scale with your spend per line, a $2 line would pay $500,000 for the same result, and a $10 line $2.5 million.

Does Keno have a maximum prize fund?

Yes. If the combined value of all prizes for matching 7 of 7, 8 of 8, 8 of 9, 9 of 9, 9 of 10 and 10 of 10 exceeds $2.5 million in a single draw (Multiplier included), those prizes are scaled back proportionally so the total stays within $2.5 million.

Is there a deadline for claiming Keno prizes?

Yes, 12 months from the draw date. After that the prize is forfeited and the money goes into the prize reserve fund.

Will I have to pay taxes if I win a prize?

Lottery prizes are paid out tax-free in New Zealand. If you live overseas, your own country's tax rules may still apply.

Where can I find the Keno results?

On our Keno results page. We add the winning numbers and multiplier within minutes of each of the four daily draws. They're also on the official Lotto NZ site.
